Shess's general first impression of Val was "very chill nonhuman who likes humans, that's nice (sincerely)", but the exact moment Val really started endearing himself was when Shess realized he wasn't torn up over killing. NOT BECAUSE SHESS NECESSARILY THINKS THAT ITSELF IS GREAT but because it confirmed that Val had a different morality than humans, and while Shess likes humans, he's not used to talking with so many at once and it got kind of tiring, so it was a relief to have someone who thought more like a sura. Shess doesn't care what people think of him/if they start side-eyeing him when he gets shady, but it's a nice change of pace to be in a judgment-free zone, which Val offered.

Val was also straightforward and honest AND HAHA SHESS CAN'T LIVE LIKE THAT but it did make Val very trustworthy. It's why he was the one person Shess told about the endgame condition that wasn't on the basis of them probably knowing already/going to learn soon—he trusted that Val would be rational about the info and wouldn't go around spreading it at the drop of a hat, and also he needed to use Val's connections.

So Val was a good and reliable ally (if dumb, Shess realized he was pretty dumb), and he was also very kind to Shess, which was a bonus. They're very different people, but Shess respects Val's sense of honour and thinks that his very sincere attitude is a breath of fresh air among people (like himself) who constantly want something from people/expect others to want something from them.

also he has absolutely no clue that val kind of has a crush on him

haha!

wow this was a disaster

Well, on a general note, like I said: Kara reminds Shess of a friend(s) back home... who coincidentally is a dragon although Shess didn't actually know about Kara's dragon motifs but anyway. The thing is that the dragons have muted/nonexistent emotions so they generally suck at dealing with people but sometimes care underneath, at the same time Shess is fully aware that even his friend(s) don't give an actual shit about him, so.

It's part of why Kara's attitude never bothered him much (even though Shess can in fact get salty if people are mean to him). His specific brand of pragmatic and rude was a little familiar, and Shess recognized pretty early on that he did have a heart. KARA WAS JUST FUCKIN CLUELESS and it made Shess very tired, but it would be a different matter if Kara was maliciously rude. The fact that Kara also trusted him with his weakness and Tsuru also helped cement it—Shess realized these were big deals, so it meant they were................... something vaguely approaching friends.

But yeah, Shess was knowingly a bitch to him. Sorry, Kara. It was because Kara wanted to make progress, for which he needed allies, so Shess did think it was for his own good (which is also why, say, he never got on Cinnabar's case for the same issue). In return, he did try and help in his own way by stanning Kara, even if it meant everyone else just went "wtf are you talking about, that guy's an asshole."

Which was also funny, because as far as Shess is concerned, Kara is actually a much kinder person than he is. I don't remember the exact thread, but his outrage over the idea of people killing here just because confirmed it for Shess. Killing for dumb and petty reasons is an ingrained part of sura culture, so Shess doesn't have any deep feelings about pointless deaths, but he can very much appreciate when other people get angry about them. So he became even more of a Kara stan? Kara is great!

(Fun fact: when Zia and I were crying over how to deal with Shirasu, we joked that we should just tell Kara so that Kara would kill Shirasu and we wouldn't have to think about it any further.)

(Also, it was a little hypocritical that Shess got on his case and he knew it, because he himself kept most people at an arm's distance in his own way to avoid too much pain. Also, internally he fully agreed that when it mattered most, you would probably be on your own, so allies and the like were just "nice to have".

But it's fine, Kara never has to know that Shess was not actually qualified to tell him to get along with people.)

The whole Axel incident threw a wrench into things for a while, alas. Shess's personal feelings towards Kara didn't really change much, because none of it was unexpected, but he did accept that he probably just tanked his relationship with Kara (in part because he figured Kara didn't really like him anyway? Shess was just occasionally useful to him?) and so he gave Kara his space. Honestly, as long as Kara kept coming to him when he needed something from Shess, it was fine, clearly. Lili didn't know what she was talking about!! Kara liking him isn't a requirement in this relationship!! He just needed Kara's trust, both for his own purposes and because he did want to keep helping Kara, despite the whole Kara-ready-to-kill-Shess's-best-friend-here awkwardness.

Oh, though for a minor salt interlude: he also used to be very bad at dealing with people (though for different reasons), so on one hand, he sympathized with Kara, but on the other hand he was a little envious that Kara felt he had the luxury to resist learning and therefore a part of him was kind of bitter. It was incredibly petty of him and he knew it so he never would've mentioned it.

ANYWAY

On the topic of things Shess would never say, ever—he was a little bothered the weekend that Miki and co. died and Kara just walked up to him and started interrogating him on things without any apparent concern if he was okay. Later, when Emma told him, he realized that oh, Kara had probably been Undertow'd by then (because, uh, he'd been a little too chill... when Lili was dead...) so he never held it against Kara, but it did kind of further plant the seed that made him wonder if Kara would've cared even if he hadn't been cursed, or if, again, he was mainly there to be useful to Kara. Which he could live with, which is why he wouldn't have tried changing anything, but yeah.

(BUT THAT WAS ALSO WHY I WROTE THAT PARTICULAR CR CHART ENTRY THAT WEEK and Shess does think Kara would probably hate him if they met under different circumstances, given that Shess's neutral stance in matters tends to make him fairly reactive rather than proactive and he thinks Kara would dislike that.)

The exact moment that Shess realized that Kara did in fact care was that he went out of his way to get Shess's wounds healed. Shess was legit very surprised, and then happy, because along with the confession that led to it, it meant mutual friendship...! Sure, he also figured Kara didn't actually like anything about him (until the second heart-to-heart), but you know what, you can be friends without finding any positive traits in the other. It doesn't matter!

But things were mostly great from there (and Shess did understand what it meant for Kara to entrust his sword with him) and though I cry over their endgame thread now, it has more to do with Shess's personal issues than Kara, so it's fine. KARA IS ONE OF HIS FAVOURITE PEOPLE HERE.

EMMA... so it was a very weird experience for Shess to have to explain sura to a human. He knew it wasn't going to sound good, because it isn't, so he accepted Emma was probably going to look at him differently from then on. Both fair and unfair, to him, but he's also not ashamed of what he is and people here have no societal power over him, so he has no reason to hide it.

So he was surprised when she continued talking to him, and then confided secrets? He wasn't going to complain, and he was glad when she told him that she was able to look past [gestures to everything about sura] because prejudice both ways is a big thing where he's from, whoops. From there, it was mostly smooth sailing, even if it was also pretty obvious that there was a culture clash going on between them—which Shess accepted, because he didn't expect her to understand a sura mindset, and he didn't necessarily want her to change her own.

Admittedly, he did get kind of annoyed when she yelled at him about withholding info from her, especially since it was on the heels of her checking up on him and giving him space, as he internally just went "when I said I wanted to be left alone, I didn't mean come back the next day and start calling me an asshole?" He got why she was mad, even if he didn't feel sorry, so he didn't resist, but. He was just a little salty inside. Sorry, Emma. He did appreciate the later apology, though.

To the end, he accepts that he probably made her uncomfortable (he's actually surprised he didn't make more people uncomfortable), and he doesn't blame her at all for not being thrilled with the idea of him being last one standing. She's very human, and as tired as it sometimes made him, that's what he likes about her! She lets her heart rule her head, has an actual functioning moral compass, to an extent can only see within the boundaries of her own viewpoint, and did her best despite everything. In some ways, she really did embody everything that made humans stand apart from immortals—especially considering a conversation he had with Roxas about how those with short lifespans and those with long ones tend to see the world very differently. She didn't understand him (which was why she was never really going to get him to change his stance on expressing feelings), but honestly, it's probably for the better that she wasn't able to.

So, given everything she's went through, he hopes that she has a happy, if short life with Axel now.

partner ):

What was not to like about Miki? She was kind, smart, determined, and strong in her own way. Shess didn't expect to get particularly attached to her, since she was obviously very human and there would probably always be a bit of a barrier (also, it was weird sharing a house with her; he figured a teenage girl would not be comfortable with sleeping in the same space as an unknown guy, so). Then they revealed that partners' lives were bound to each other, and he just went, "oh, fuck."

So, he obviously had a very big investment in keeping her alive. The fact that she couldn't really fight was... worrying, but otherwise, he appreciated having a good and competent partner whom he could trust with things if need be. Though her seriousness was also kind of amusing, because Shess can be a shit at times (which is to say that he found the Minato thing funny, sorry Miki).

(He was sad after reading her journal and realizing how much she was struggling. He did wish that she had told him so he could've helped her somehow, even if he admittedly wouldn't... have been able to fully empathize with her guilt over killing people who needed to be killed... But he also fully understands why she didn't.)

They were probably never going to see eye-to-eye about the whole worrying thing, though... For one, it was very weird, because the only real reaction to Shess's kind are some combination of hate, fear, or the assumption that they'll be able to handle anything given that they're far more OP than humans, so he's not used to humans showing concern. The other thing is that strength is all that matters in his society, and as someone who was born weak, he had to claw his way to the top. So logically, he understands what Miki is trying to say (and a part of him appreciates it, because the reason he had to become independent was because no one cared about him), but irrationally, the entire point of becoming strong was to be beyond scorn or pity, so someone "weaker" being worried about him makes it feel like he did something wrong?

But, you know, he was never going to say that because wow that would get into awkward territory and Miki didn't need that.

Still, really, stop trying to fight people on his behalf. DO NOT FIGHT THE CLOWN, HE'S FINE. STOP. This is what he disliked about Hisoka, more than Hisoka's horniness or threats of breaking him or potentially screwing everyone else over. He did sort of view Miki as one of his "charges", so to speak, so he was especially protective of her. :/ No bothering Miki.

Except then she DIED so what did it matter!!

Anyway, while he doesn't know much about her home, he hopes that her wish made things better and then she gets to have a happier future now, possibly with Kaoru. Go and get your boyfriend, Miki.

cinnabar.........

Okay, so Cinnabar was mean at first, but it was pretty quickly clear it came from a place of awkwardness and sadness and fear rather than Cinnabar trying to be a dick, so Shess was willing to endure. It was unfortunate they felt they had to be isolated for something that probably didn't matter here, so as far as Shess was concerned, it was low effort on his part for something that could give Cinnabar greater happiness.

Then Cinnabar's further issues came to light, and that was pretty much when Shess decided he was never giving up on this person, ever. Because—yeah. He never told Cinnabar, but he did get it. He was abused and abandoned for being weak during his childhood (and the one person who cared about him got erased from the world, meaning he didn't remember her for most of his life), so while their situations were very different, he sympathized with Cinnabar for what it's like to be alone and unwanted for something you can't even help. In particular, since Shess probably had to learn how to stand his ground on his own, he wanted to make it easier for Cinnabar—to become more confident knowing that there was someone to catch them if they fell.

(This was why they got child-zoned, though... you're right... Not because he saw them as a kid, especially, but the person who was once there for him was his foster mom, so at heart, he was kind of trying to be for Cinnabar what she was for him, so.)

So while Cinnabar saw their relationship as unequal and they aren't entirely wrong about that, Shess did feel he got something out of their relationship. He never repaid his debt to his foster mom, and while he can't say for sure, Mikazuki suggested that Shess turned out the way he did because he subconsciously wanted to be like her, so being able to help Cinnabar helped honour her memory, in a way. And, more selfishly, it was nice knowing for sure someone here meaningfully cared about him (because Shess is perfectly capable of making friendly relations with humans, but he's also pretty sure most of them wouldn't be devastated if anything happened to him, at least back home).

It helped that Cinnabar was good!! Clueless and uninterested in the grand scheme of things, but Shess could tell they tried very hard and cared a lot—like he said, it's why he trusted them with the tidbit that they could get their powers back. The idea that they hated having something that made them strong is SO WEIRD for a sura, given their strength-obsessed society and flippancy towards destruction, but he really did like how kind they were. He was also very proud whenever he saw them making an effort!!

(Except the thing with Akane. That tired him out a lot, even if he did understand why Cinnabar hated her.)

Ultimately, he wasn't... shocked when Akane killed them (avoiding people killing him is part of why Shess is so diplomatic?), but he was still upset, especially since it did feel like he'd failed them. Still, if he made their life even a bit happier, then he accepted he'd have to be content with that.

And then somehow he ended up still playing counsellor for them even when they were dead, but because it was Cinnabar he shoved aside any tiredness and always tried responding to their messages, no matter how exasperating or mundane.

... But yeah, sorry Cinnabar, he was never going to burden them with his issues.

Even though everyone else kept going NORTH IS AN ASSHOLE in the beginning, Shess liked her! Granted, he cheated by virtue of being nonhuman, and he did understand why they found her difficult, but he could tell she was trying hard and was more pragmatic than "I'm going to be an asshole for the hell of it". Admittedly, he was surprised whenever she was outright nice to him, but he did appreciate that too.

Disclaimer, though: he was actually kind of salty that one trial she called him a moron for letting Minato have a gun, given that he was still sad over losing three of his friends in one night. He acted chill because it wasn't important, but know that his internal reaction was basically, "bitch." NORTH DID LOSE UNO POINT FOR THAT, SORRY NORTH.

Anyhow, again, Shess liked that she tried hard and was working towards the greater good, no matter her surly attitude. He can see why she was a popular candidate for lms, even if he was a little dubious because she also seemed biased in certain ways and he preferred someone who could put aside their feelings. He doesn't think he'd necessarily call them friends, but North was a reliable ally, at least.

re: lili

SHESS LIKED LILI A LOT... she was very funny. But no, really, alongside Emma, Lili was the embodiment of everything human. (But also very amusing to watch or tease sometimes.) She burned bright, really did not understand or agree with a sura mindset, and is almost definitely going to die young? Shess did not expect her to survive the entire game and sure enough, he was right! He was still sad, but.

Anyway, for all of her attitude (and Shess is patience and tolerant enough that yeah, he didn't mind her bossing him around or whatever), he could tell she was very kind with a strong sense of justice (but also pragmatic when needed), so he liked her!! And even though he really did not need her concern (shess's mental note: do not actually give her any of his backstory), he appreciated it. In sura society, it's the right of the strong to treat the weak however they please, and Shess's entire life is the epitome of that? So although Lili didn't know the depth of it and was outraged over something relatively minor, it was nice, at least, to have one person tell him he deserved better. Even though it changes nothing at all, he'll probably hold onto the memory of that...

On a day to day basis, chatting her was nice. While she was also someone he explained questionable things about suras too, he never really felt like she was lowkey judging him for it, unlike maybe with Emma, so he did feel comfortable being somewhat open around her.

BUT SHE DIDN'T NEED TO INTERFERE IN HIS AND KARA'S RELATIONSHIP, THEY WERE FINE, IT'S JUST... YEAH... It was cute that she cared, and he appreciated the thought, but.......... you know...........

Anyhow.

He wants to see how far she'll go (... or at least get Kara to tell him, because he's still probably not going to contact many people if they don't contact him first), assuming she doesn't, like, get in way over her head and then get assassinated or something. He's not discounting that possibility. BUT IF SHE MANAGES TO SURVIVE AGAINST THE ODDS he imagines she has the potential to become a great leader and lead her people to prosperity, so he's rooting for her?

(He was not especially rooting for her and Kara, though. Oops. He figured they were better as friends.)

also i guess that's all, time to move on to the next person!

okay fine

rolls up sleeves

So Shess clicked with Mikazuki immediately, because... yeah, same energy. Which doesn't happen often for Shess, because he's always been in a weird position—too experienced compared to other suras of his ranking, still inferior by nature to other suras he matches for age, too sura-like to fit in among humans, too compassionate for a sura. So it's a breath of fresh air to talk to someone like Mikazuki, whom he can meet as an equal and who shares a lot of similar worldviews with him. Or, even, just someone was even-tempered enough to bounce philosophical discussions off of, given that no one where he's from is known for being open-minded...

It was especially significant here, where Mikazuki was one of the few adults... he and Axel were pretty much the only two people Shess was mostly relaxed around, and Mikazuki's position as an omniscient-ish neutral party made it even easier to discuss whatever. Shess has always had to be on guard in some way, whether because he's withholding info, or because he's so much older, or because of a culture clash, or because he's trying to guide the person to a certain path—but Mikazuki was one of the only people to whom he could be anything without it being a misstep, and he appreciated that safe space, so to speak.

And sure, Mikazuki made him a tired a lot, but that's all part of being friends, and it was always over trivial stuff. Actually, it would've been weirder if Mikazuki was so "perfect" that he never exasperated Shess, and their banter was enjoyable. That aside, he could appreciate Mikazuki being a shit (when it wasn't at him), found his cluelessness in certain matters funny (again, when he wasn't on the receiving end of it), and overall liked how kind Mikazuki could be, at the same time that he was just detached enough to not be unrelatably nice.

It was after partner memshare that Shess realized their friendship was becoming real. Namely, because Mikazuki did his whole bit about how Shess's thoughts and feelings matter and that he was there for him. (And then he made sharing that memory his task, and Shess really realized that oh, Mikazuki was kind of invested.) And it was... odd, since [gestures to Miki's tl;cr] he's not really used to people thinking about his feelings, between being "above" humans" and the sura's power hierarchy/tendency towards abuse of authority. In fact, his mom's straight up said that what he wants doesn't matter, so while Shess doesn't necessarily feel that way about himself, he knows the world doesn't care, making it very sweet to hear someone explicitly say otherwise.

At the end of the day, Shess's worth has always been determined by what he physically brings to the table. To an extent, he expected sentimentality from the humans here because they had no preconceptions of sura and soft-heartedness is in their nature, but from someone more neutral and ruthless like Mikazuki? To be honest, Shess feels kind of guilty, since he got more out of their friendship than Mikazuki did, but it was nice to have someone who valued him as a person rather than as a tool. (He wasn't going to press Mikazuki on his problems, in part because he doubted it would work and also because he didn't want people to do it for him, so he wasn't going to be a hypocrite.)

Actually, if Mikazuki didn't send him flowers and tea whenever he was ghosting him, he'd probably have been concerned that their friendship meant way more to him than Mikazuki and it was just Mikazuki liking everyone/obligation as the host, but the. constant gifts sort of said something.

Anyway, in particular, as uncomfortable as it was for him to talk about it, he was grateful that Mikazuki helped him navigate his feelings about his recovered memories. While Shess had his mini breakdown of sorts in private off-screen... since he never had the opportunity to properly grieve back then between his mother being what she was and then the memory retcon, he was pretty much in renewed mourning for a while here, and he was glad to have someone with him while he reflected over it now.

Though Mikazuki really only got all of that, because yeah, he said that about how having been unable to help others before. At heart, partly because his first was ripped away from him before he was ready, Shess has always wanted to be able to rely on some form of support. In the end, Mikazuki made himself that, because of playing that card + similar levels of maturity even if Shess is technically far older + understanding Shess better than anyone else here. Like I said, he was probably the only person who understood Shess fully (his advice to Cinnabar was spot-on, weeps), especially when everyone else had misconceptions on what motivated Shess.

Still, Shess had to fight it, because as he told Mikazuki—he didn't want to become spoiled by that kindness. He didn't think he'd see Mikazuki again once everything was done here, and sooner or later, he'll be going back to his clan and all that entails. For all that Shess gave Kara shit over his inability to connect with others, he's pretty pain-aversive himself, so why get too comfortable with a relationship that was always meant to be fleeting?

In the end, Mikazuki's corruption was the hardest part of endgame for him, even though he wasn't surprised by it. Admittedly, a very small and irrational part of him was bitter that Mikazuki said everything he did and yet still left him behind, since it hit a little too close to home (what with Airavata telling him he didn't need her anymore when she died and his life promptly going to hell afterwards). Mostly, though, he's sad for Mikazuki (and Kara), who was the bigger victim in things, and doesn't hold the stabbing against him even remotely.

And now, after everything Mikazuki's done for him, he's walking away with yet another debt he can't repay.

It's fine.

(He also figures that Mikazuki's kind of uncomfortable with talking to him, given the way he's acting on the endgame log, so he's not going to push him and again ig they're never talking after this.)

re: namine

First impression was nice, quiet girl who unwittingly enabled Minato and had a low sense of self-worth, probably. TBH THAT WAS HIS OPINION FOR A WHILE—funnily enough, his opinion of her rose when Xion was outed and he immediately realized, "oh, Namine covered for her during the elemental manipulation reveal." Not because he necessarily approved of hiding a corrupted, but because it also demonstrated that Namine could be shrewd, and as a shady bitch, Shess can respect that.

Along with Axel's vouching that Namine would handle the endgame conditions well, Shess figured that, on top of the initial thoughts, she was competent and reasonable and while they were never going to be close, he knew other people would probably tell her stuff and she'd helped as needed. To be honest, if she'd lived, he would've been fine with her for lms (she wouldn't have been his top vote, but he understood why she was some others').

re: tsurumaru

Kara's Friend.

Okay, well, first thoughts was that Tsuru was kind of a goofy guy... given the dress-up and chickens and everything... but then he died, and at that point, everything about him revolved around that Kara lost a comrade and was sad and Shess was trying to find ways to help Kara.

Then he received a surprise message from Tsuru?? AND BECAUSE NO ONE ELSE WAS REPLYING TO SHESS he ended up being pen pals with Tsuru, by virtue of the fact that Tsuru responded even if he couldn't fuckin remember the character limit to save his life. Thankfully, Shess was more amused than annoyed unlike some people, so it was just... an endearing personality trait...

But also, he's glad that Kara and Tsuru were messaging, if it helped ease Kara's loss at all. Shut up, no, karashess is not real. I KNOW WHAT YOU'RE THINKING.

Anyhow, overall, he liked Tsuru's personality well enough and thinks they could've gotten to be friends if Tsuru hadn't McDied so early on. Since Tsuru did, he mostly appreciated that Tsuru was as helpful as he could be from the great beyond.

OH NO THAT'S SO CUTE

anyhow, Minato was worrying. NO SURPRISES THERE. Quick read was that Minato was kind and well-meaning, but kind of clueless and dumb with no sense of self-preservation, and also probably very depressed. But that's... also why Shess chose to focus on that last one, instead of trying to get Minato to be more careful as he figured everyone else was doing. Doing all these silly things, even if they were also very reckless, seemed to help him enjoy life more, so Shess didn't want to take them away and instead settled for trying to moderate them. Or, for helping in small ways, like learning how to bake bread so that he could make birthday bread for him...

(Fun fact: Lune gave Shess a task to express emotional vulnerability to someone, and oocly this came after he had a bit of a heart-to-heart with Minato but icly before, therefore fulfilling the task which also makes Minato one of the only people Shess was ever emotionally open around, even if just for a moment. WE WERE DYING THAT IT WAS MINATO, OF ALL PEOPLE.)

He also kept Minato's omamori to the end because it was a sweet gesture, even if he absolutely did not think it would do anything at all. It did make a good hiding place, though (he kept actually useful talismans in it), and helped cover for his second and more important omamori. But mostly, it was for sentimental purposes.

SO HE LIKED AXEL RIGHT AWAY if mainly because Axel was one of the only adults around. Sure, he's a dumbass, but Shess is so tired of being surrounded by babies. It was nice to be able to chat with someone as an equal, and it helped that Axel was so laidback? I mentioned this in Jiji's tl;cr, but Shess did generally feel a certain pressure (self-imposed or otherwise) to be a certain person for various individuals, but Axel was one of the few who had zero expectations of him so Shess could just be whoever. Didn't have to be emotional support, didn't have to walk the line between "don't think I'm kinder than I actually am" and "but also don't think I'm some psychopath either", etc. He didn't tell Axel much about sura beyond that "yeah we would've tpk'd in week 1 if more were here" but he's pretty sure Axel wouldn't judge?

Anyhow, they could just talk and joke around and snark at each other (and also Axel was fun to tease). AXEL WAS ONE OF THE PEOPLE SHESS WAS MEANEST TO but in a friendly sort of way.

I hate that Hisoka brought them together because that's a cursed line to write but it's unfortunately true. They got to discussing the note, and then roles, and thus Axel pretty much became Shess's go-to person for plot talk because he was basically the first. Plus, bonding over mutual Hisoka suffering, though thank god Axel got the lion's share of that.

That said, Axel's reaction to Mary did make it clear that Axel, while logical and ruthless in his own way, was also someone who could be ruled by his heart. Shess didn't really begrudge him too much for it because tbh that's a very human response (though getting his role doxxed to Milla was sort of his punishment), but AXEL AND KARA MADE SHESS SO TIRED. Learning that Kara hated Axel in the same moment he learned Kara was the Nebula that week made him tired. Inadvertently setting his own relationship with Kara on fire made him tired. Talking to Jiji about it made him tired. Realizing Xion was the corrupted made him tired. Talking to Milla and Emma after the fact made him tired. (Axel actually would've been invited to that meeting but Shess figured he'd rather spend the night with Xion.)

He moved past it after that weekend though since a) he wasn't going to choose Axel over Kara or vice versa, and b) he didn't think Axel was as dangerous as Kara made him out to be since it wasn't like Axel was a RAMPANT LIAR and he did do his best when anyone besides his friends was involved, so Shess just desperately hoped Namine wouldn't be corrupted (haha!) but knew she probably would eventually be and they'd cross that bridge when it came. Sorry, Axel. Shess simultaneously told Kara that he'd interfere if Kara tried to stab Axel but he'd also kill Axel himself if Axel did become a liability.

(I mean, the fact that Axel didn't seem to hold any of this against him and just went "fair" is why they were friends. They accepted each other's mutual shadiness.)

Until then, he still very much enjoyed Axel's company, and they still saw eye-to-eye on a lot (case in point, all the times Emma said or did something and Axel and Shess were both just "UH/WELL..."). He also appreciated that Axel took the endgame conditions well even if out of sheer stubbornness.

The moment he appreciated most, though, was Axel giving him ice cream and being all "yeah I assume you don't want to talk so just have my company instead." It wasn't necessarily the sweetest thing anyone did for him (i mean ig literally it was sweet) (jiji probably wins that one) but it was probably the gesture Shess was most grateful for. AXEL WINS IN HOW TO HANDLE SAD PEOPLE. Because yeah, it was a way of saying he was there for him without making Shess feel obliged to assure the other person their attempts were enough. Both Axel and Shess really did not like to talk about feelings oops but that probably suited them both just fine? At least for Shess, being able to just chat like usual while internally acknowledging that not great feelings were going on was enough.

He won't be taking Axel up on that offer for a vacation for a long time (but he will reply to all of Axel's cat pictures), though honestly if there ever reaches a point where Shess gives up on the world or whatever, he'd probably message Axel going "hey pick me up now" and yolo off to KH land ig.

FRIENDSHIP!!!!!!
