OKAY so like the minute the KH cast showed up in-game Roxas started highkey screaming because it went from being about trying to help people who were going to work with the universe to being about protecting what was "his" and keeping his friends safe. He knows Axel of all people can take care of himself but that didn't stop him from being exhaustively worried about what was going to happen because he also knows Axel is very much. Himself.
He should have figured Axel would know immediately that he was Sol, but he didn't because he's an idiot. However, then Tokidoki was assigned to be killed and he had to pick another Corona, he defaulted to Axel because he a.) knew he could trust him and b.) he could keep an eye on him more easily this way and they could talk, etc. As a whole, Roxas's everything stabilized by having Axel around and having his best friends within reach and keeping everyone together. He was still able to hang out with them and joke around and still make some good memories. They were still able to have fun sometimes, and they were still able to be with each other and that's what mattered to him.
A lot of things changed for both of them in this game. Roxas had his role as an NPC and Axel started getting actively involved in the plot and what was happening. I do think being an NPC helped him understand Axel's position in Days a little better because even if he had been allowed to, he's not sure how he would have been able to tell Axel the news about what was going on, what the universe wanted, his corruption, etc. It doesn't change that he wasn't happy at the time and he still wants to try and be as honest as possible, but it helps a little and he will still tell anyone who listens that Axel's the best and Axel's still trustworthy. But it doesn't hurt that Axel will listen to him and that they covered for Xion, etc. Whoops. He's aware he was letting his bias show pretty early but he also didn't care because that was his mom, so everyone else could get in line and wait.
He still feels a lot of guilt when it comes to Axel and Xion being the ones to kill him, not to mention guilt for having them here in the first place and for having Axel shoulder everything all over again. In the end, he made an effort not to mention how terrified he was and the fact that he wasn't sure he'd be coming back at all but yay it all worked out, it's fine!! He wouldn't have wanted anyone else besides those two anyway and he would've outright maimed whoever got close so it's. Fine. He has a lot to make up for though because Axel still listens to his stupid problems and lets him whine and reassures him, and Roxas is pretty sure they're just stuck together forever.
Time to get a dog and make it one big happy family.
