throws roxas in a ditch
HOW DID THIS HAPPEN, TEEJ? CAN YOU PLEASE EXPLAIN?? So okay, Shirasu at first was someone Roxas treated like any other participant in that he was just someone who was looking for plot information and ways around the system, so Roxas was like "alright, whatever" and humored him. It was mostly because Shirasu kept coming back and saying things that piqued Roxas's interest that he started really paying attention and decided the option to befriend was something he should do. As a guide, he knew he was supposed to help everyone in the game and it's why he wanted to help Shirasu with his powers and etc.
Shirasu also explaining some stuff about what happened to him at home also helped Roxas start to understand him more. He didn't trust him right away, but he was absolutely curious and decided he'd take a risk on him. Shirasu's experiences reminded him of someone else who managed to overcome and control the darkness and so he decided that if Shirasu could put in the work, it'd be fine.
The other thing is that he regularly spoke to Roxas as an equal even if he didn't think he did, and it meant that Roxas in turn was more likely to treat him with respect. He felt like there was definitely potential there and that Shirasu just had to try, and so Roxas tried a lot to get Shirasu's good side to come out. Then Shirasu killed a bird and also stabbed his best friend so Roxas went OKAY FINE WHATEVER and went into overdrive to try and figure it out. It was a very strange time balancing that friendship while also being indignant about what happened because he couldn't say "oh he didn't mean to" because like. Shirasu.
In the end, especially after he died, Shirasu was someone who got to see some of the brattier parts of Roxas and someone he was pretty openly honest with. He didn't see a reason to lie to Shirasu and overall even with his poor choices he felt like he owed him that much because Shirasu himself, again, even if he didn't really realize it, was treating Roxas with the same courtesy. He would absolutely consider them friends but he's not going to be like "you don't have flaws" because oh boy does he ever.
He's worried about what his future's going to be like, and even if he doesn't like Hisoka, there's some relief knowing that Shirasu got a choice after all and that he'll be going somewhere he can continue living a life of his own. He values their friendship, no matter how strange it really is, and he's going to make some form of effort to try and catch up again someday.
