but anyways...... i want to just gesture at every other conversation that minato and four have haha she really was a driving force for a lot of his growth, but she did it in such a pushy way that minato was constantly resistant to it. but he also understood that she nags bc she cares, bc nobody would put forward so much time and energy into something they didn't care about, when they could so easily just give up on him and ignore him and that's honestly what he expected everybody in the game to do, give up on him and leave him be. but four never did that and he was always uncertain about why, and four was probably the one person minato had the most trouble getting a read on, bc he would say something nice and she would smile, then he would say something nice(?) and she would get pissed off, and it happens so quickly and he never quite figured out why. he thinks maybe she hated him bc he's so self-destructive that people come to worry about him and he spurns their care, when on other other hand four is out there doing her best and people aren't all gathering around her. and all those times she felt like she could never really understand him, it was exactly the same on his side, so the reason why she was so high on his people he's scared of list is because he doesn't know how to be around her (besides "make an effort" but he's not going to do that) because four is just so cynical that she tends to not believe any of his sweet talk, and she was always very strict towards him, which he understands and realizes is the only way to get him to do things bc if he's coddled, he will take advantage of that and do nothing.
and then she killed him
and he went "oh"
and it was really only then that he started to get it. he understood that the way he acts— like it's nobody's business but his own— endears him to no one and can be offensive enough to drive somebody to kill him. he's used to being ignored, but actively hated? wow! and he immediately justifies it in his mind that four is right to kill him, not only because of what he's like but for what he could be like, a true neutral who's a double edged sword in terms of wanting to save everyone and wanting to kill everyone. it was sort of like facing his canonpoint again, facing inevitable death and it was right then when the shit blew up that he realized that he wanted to live, even if he died half a second later. but it was a life-changing moment regardless! so the reason why minato holds four in such high regard despite what she did is because she killed him haha he trusted her to be objective and prioritize the general good above all else bc she was a ruler and that's what rulers do. and killing him because she felt he was the most dangerous person there and she's not wrong, if he had been chosen for corruption, he would have taken as many people as he could down with him with no remorse because he would have been fully entrenched from the bad end "death as a salvation" mindset and by killing him, four saved him, and is basically the reason he leaves the game as good end minato
the love he has for four is largely appreciative, the sort of love that edges upon reverence, because he knows he can't change her life as much as she's changed his, but he tries anyways bc in his mind, four had never done any wrong. he wants her to feel loved and appreciated bc he loves and appreciates her and doens't know how to get that across besides repeating it every chance he gets, and he absolutely does not want her to ever feel alone and that nobody will stand beside her.
which is also funny bc i remember one of their initial conversations was about making a pact where they would tell each other anything they learned plot-wise and then minato proceeded to never tell her anything bc he never learned anything about the plot until after he was dead
